6 Ways to Eliminate Headaches

Headaches come in all different types and sizes. There is the low-grade, nagging headache, the headache that hangs out just behind the eyes, the sinus pressure headache and, of course, the “Oh My God! Shoot me now!” pain of a migraine.

Know that these headaches are not just annoyances. Your kids did not CAUSE the headache by tearing through the living room while you are trying to suffer quietly on the couch. Headaches are a way of your body telling you that something is not right.

So, before you grab another over-the-counter pain reliever that will lead to your liver having to work in overtime and, possibly, to yet another headache. Listen to what your body is telling you and provide it with what it needs.

One of the biggest reasons that we suffer from headaches is simple dehydration. You don’t have to feel thirsty for your body to be needing more water. One of the most common things I hear as a health coach is, “but I drink all day.” WHAT are you drinking all day? Most people are not drinking plain, clear water or water flavored with a slice of fruit. They are drinking coffee, caffeinated tea, soda, seltzer water or alcohol. None of these help hydrate the body. Actually most of these act as diurectics and contribute to the problem.

Being Magnesium Deficient

Magnesium deficiencies is one of the top three mineral deficiencies in the United States. We should be receiving magnesium through our food but if the soil that the plants are grown in is magnesium deficient, the plants can’t absorb the magnesium from the soil, and we can’t get the magnesium from our food. Before big agricultural companies took over growing our food from the small farmers, crops were rotated and fields were allowed to rest between crops which gave the soil time to regenerate. Now, when one crop is harvested, the next is put in. The soil doesn’t have time to recover and it is our health that is suffering.

Magnesium is needed in our bodies for a whole host of chemical reactions. When we are missing this key nutrient our bodies inform us through headaches, constipation, muscle soreness and other ways. There are many great supplements on the market that can help us combat magnesium deficiencies and help these symptoms to go away.

Water Therapy

I love that term, “Water Therapy.” How much better do you feel when you have been sick for a few days and you finally drag yourself out of bed and take a shower? There’s nothing like it. Am I right?

You can use water therapy to get rid of a headache too. Fill a tub with water as hot as you can stand. Add ½ cup of Epsom salts to the running water and 4 or 5 drops of lavender essential oils. Put a cold pack on the back of your neck while you soak in the tub.

This does a few things. The Epsom salts help remove toxins from your body that might be causing the headache. The lavender oil will relax you. Finally the cold pack in combination with the hot bath will cause the blood vessels in your head to constrict and increase the blood flow to the rest of your body. This will relieve the pressure in your head and help to eliminate the headache.

By the way, if you don’t have a tub, you can put your feet in a hot bucket of water with a cold pack on your neck or forehead and get a similar effect.

I know. It seems so obvious. I cannot begin to tell you how many of my clients just don’t go to bed at night. When you get enough sleep, your body does not need to let you know that it is unhappy. A headache can be a sign that you just are not sleeping enough. Give yourself permission to take a nap or, if that is not possible, go to bed earlier. Sometimes you might have to ask for help from a spouse, kids or a friend to make this happen. Maybe your friend can take your kids today and you can return the favor when they need a break to get extra rest or have a date night.

Food Sensitivities

People HATE hearing that their crackers and cheese may be the cause of their headaches. Or that their nightly glass of wine, or two, is interfering with their sleep and leading to their headaches. Food sensitivities are a very common reason to get a headache. I can tell you from personal experience, the headaches that I had been suffering from for as long as I can remember were eliminated when I stopped eating dairy products.

These are just a few ways to eliminate headaches. I’d love to hear from you! What works for you?

Be Well,

Thanks, Laura! If you find that none of these suggestions work for you, let me know. There is always a root cause for our symptoms and you don’t need to suffer anymore!
