Is Your Toothpaste Making You Fat?
If you are always tired, easily gain weight, depressed, and struggle with PMS, look to your toothpaste. Many commercial brands of toothpaste contain fluoride. This is great for protecting your teeth but at what cost to your health?
With thyroid diseases of all types on the rise – hypo- and hyper-thyroidism, Graves’ Disease, and Hashimoto’s, items that are common place in our environment are making us sick and it’s time that we looked to our food, cleaning supplies and, yes, even our toothpaste, to find out why.
Iodine is an element that makes up one of the key thyroid hormones, thyroxine, which is also known as tetraiodothyronine. Another name for this is “T4.” T4 is made up of two molecules of tyrosine and three molecules of iodine. T4 converts to T3 and it is this T3 hormone which enters our cells and helps supply us with energy.
Unfortunately, there are other elements in our world that have similar properties to iodine. These elements, along with iodine, are known as halogens and include fluorine, chlorine and bromine. These can all bind to the same receptors on the T4 that iodine can. When this occurs, our bodies are tricked into thinking we have plenty of this hormone but, in reality, it is not a form that will convert to T3 easily and this makes us tired and sluggish. Symptoms that express themselves in ways that make us think that we are “just getting old.”
The good news is that this is reversible through dietary and lifestyle changes.
5 Things to Avoid the Halogens
- Change up your toothpaste to a fluoride free one. One option for fluoride free toothpaste is Tom’s of Maine or make your own.
- Don’t drink fluoridated water. Hint: this may be coming out of your tap.
- Use non-bleach cleaning supplies. Some great options are baking soda and lemon juice.
- Use unbrominated, unchlorinated flours. Avoid baked goods. Those are a source of bromine AND chlorine!
- Ditch the SPLENDA and other artificial, chemical sweeteners. These are made through a process that uses chlorine.
And help your body force these toxins out by increasing your consumption of iodine. This can be gently with whole foods. Increase your consumption of sea salt, seaweed and fish. These foods contain natural sources of iodine that will replace the other halogens that you need to remove.
